It was the best day of my working career. One Friday evening, I was serving a fussy customer at the restaurant I worked at. I was carrying a bowl of hot fish soup on a tray. Her children were dashing everywhere. One of them pushed me aside and the bowl of hot sup went splat on the ground. The customer was shocked and complained about it to my manager. She even said that I brought shame to the restaurant's name. I was then fired. I took my bag and walked out of the back alley.
I was taking a shortcut back home when I felt someone following me. I began to be worried. Nobody liked to walk through the back alley. Thoughts, negative ones, flooded in my mind. With every step I took, I told myself to calm down and walk quickly.
Finally, I took the chance. I glanced back. It was a man.He was wearing a tie and was holding a case. My heart started pumping even faster. I recognised that tie. It was the exact same type as one of the customers I served just before getting fired. He had an evil grin.
"What is he up to?" I started asking myself. I took a decision to turn round the corner. I waited for him. When he showed up, I pushed him towards the wall.
"What do you want from me, mister?!?" I cried, angrily.
"I, I just wanted to ask you if you would like to be hired by me," he began in a very business-like tone. He took out a card from his pocket and passed it to me. I took it from him. He was a boss at a very new restaurant near my neighbourhood.
"I'm sorry, I did not mean to," I tried to explain.
"It's alright. I had been going round restaurants hunting for waitresses and waiters like you," he said.
He also claimed that he had been watching me do my work. When he heard I was fired, he knew it was a chance for him to strike.
From the alley, we went to his restaurant, sat there and discussed about the available jobs. He offered me the job of a senior waitress for. Without hesitations, I quickly agreed. My job would be to help him in hiring the people with the right aptitude as waiters and waitresses, and to give them the training. My pay was three times higher than being a waitress.
Now, the restaurant is famous and it has attracted people from around the world to visit our outlets. I was soon promoted to the senior manager of the food chain. I will never forget the way I got to know my boss, now my business partner from food chain.
