Challenging Sums - Making a Supposition

1. Mrs Tan sold 95 apples and pear. Each apple cost $1.20. Each pear cost $0.20 less than apple. If she sold all the apples and pear and collected $98, how many apples did she sell?

2. Mrs Tan sold 85 curry puffs and apple pies. Each curry puff cost $1.20. Each apple pie cost 40 cents less than a curry puff. If she sold all the curry puffs and apple pies and collected $78, how many apple pies did she sell?

3. 42 boys and girls won a total of 336 tokens from a carnival. Each boy won 7 tokens and each girl won 10 tokens. How many boys were there?

Maths Challenging Sums (3)

1. Susan bought 28 packets of sweets. Each packet had 12 sweets. She gave away 80 sweets. She then repacked the remaining sweets equally into 8 packets. How many sweets were there in each of the new packet? (3m)

2. Joe had a ball of string of length 27 m. He cut 4 m of the string to tie up some parcels. The remaining string was then cut into 4 equal pieces. What is the length of each piece of string? Express your answer as a mixed number. (3m)

3. Mrs Wong had two similar jugs.  The first jug had 1l of water and the second jug had 5/9l  of water. What amount of water must Mrs Wong pour from the first jug into the second jug so that both jugs had the same amount of water? Express your answer as a fraction.  (3m)

1. Mei Shan bought 69 kg of sugar. She packed an equal amount of sugar into 8 bags and had 4 kg of sugar left. What is the mass of sugar in each bag? Express your answer as a decimal correct to 1 decimal place. (3m)



2. A container holding liquid X weighs 4.95 kg altogether. The same container holding liquid Y
weighs 8.95 kg altogether. Liquid Y weighs twice as heavy as liquid X. Find the weight of the
empty container. (3m)



3. The total mass of 2 bags of rice and a packet of sugar is 12.25 kg.  The total mass of a bag of rice and 2 packets of sugar is 8 kg.  What is the mass of a packet of sugar? (4m)

Exercise 1 - Whole Numbers

1.  Ahmad bought a shirt and 2 similar pairs of jeans for $172. The price of the shirt was half the price of a pair of jeans. Find the price of 9 pairs of jeans. (3m)

2. A table cost $4 more than a chair. 15 tables cost twice as much as 10 chairs. What is the cost of a chair? (3m)

3. Mr Wong and Mr Raju had an equal amount of money at first. After Mr Wong spent $588 on a washing machine, and Mr Raju won $150 in a lucky draw, Mr Raju had 4 times as much money as Mr Wong. How much money did Mr Raju have at first? (4m)
