Yeast is alive.
· Yeasts belong to a group of simple organisms known as (1) __________, which exist almost everywhere in nature, including the air. Yeasts reproduce rapidly, and they grow especially well in substances containing (2)______________. Yeast cells reproduce by splitting in two or by (3)______________. In budding, part of the cell wall of the yeast swells and forms a new growth called a bud. The bud then breaks off and becomes an independent cell.
· The characteristics of life include using energy (i.e. metabolism), ability to grow and
develop, reproduction, response to the environment and evolutionary adaptation, composed of one or more cells, and has genetic material.
· In this lesson we cover the fact that yeast has the ability to metabolize, i.e. utilize energy. When (4)_______________is available, the yeast metabolizes the sugar and produces (5)___________, a gas which accumulates in the balloons and causes them to get bigger. We also cover that they (6)_______________in the presence of sugar.
